The Good
- Dean was looking mighty fine in the torurer's light. (He was looking mighty messed up in the final scene, which also made the list of good for a. all the hurt/comfort fic I need to read. Like now. and b. because for once, they didn't use CW-glue to put him back together after a demon rearranged his face.)
- ANNA! I'm so, SO glad she's back. And that she's not dead (yet). And that she's in position to be a key player in all of this. For a moment in the beginning of the ep. I thought the big reveal was going to be that SHE was killing the angels. I like it so much better this way.
- "He's the funniest angel in the garrison. Ask anyone." Misha was so BRILLIANTLY deadpan. I love him, too. I'm glad that he's growing a pair. I also love that the "our side" at the end really consists, now, of Dean, Castiel, Anna, and ostensibly Sam-- not all of heaven any longer.
- I LOVE that Dean started the whole apocalypse. Brilliant turn. And not one I saw coming at all.
- I almost cried when Sam said Dean wasn't strong enough to do the job anymore. That wasn't no siren talking. These are the moments that the gulf between them is most poignant. I sometimes wonder if Sam remembers that Dean's whole time in hell was for his sake, because he couldn't live without his brother.
- The direction in this ep was brilliant, from lighting to camera angles, to the whole setup of so many of the shots.
The Less Good
- The whole mytharc is getting so BIG. (With some mighty clumsy expositional dialogue.) I'm hooked of course and holding my breath to see what comes next. But I also feel like the boys I fell in love with are a little lost in its grandeur. As a side note: I love that Dean feels the same way about it.
- Demon-Vampire!Sam. Er. I may have predicted that he was "eating" demons, but this was not the way I expected it to happen... logistically? I thought it would be in much more of a Heath Ledger, sin-eater sort of way. Admittedly, I've been on a bit of a vampire kick lately, but Sam sucking down on Ruby's arm was just so much not sexy at all.
- I wish there was a little more time to show Sam and Dean interacting, especially at the end. What a difference from In My Time of Dying to Now.
The future
My prediction: Dean will disappear from Sam's side and from the fight. Sam, of course, will press on at the expense of his goodness and humanity. It will turn out that Ruby has been grooming Sam to break the final seal. Dean will stop the apocalypse to save the one thing he will always fight to save: Sam's soul. And in a scene reminiscent of the Buffy S6 finale (aka the yellow crayon speech) all will be put right again. The end.
As for next week's promo: I think I read that fanfic once. *g*
