eee! Yeah, the cow in question in this particular incident was sedate enough that we could lay her on her side (though not completely under) and had lidocaine locally. We're actually quite conscientious about what our patients feel (mostly because of their tendency to bite, kick or scratch when they don't like what we're doing) which is was made this so funny.
Hee. We're actually very good about blocking/sedating/anesthetizing (when it's safe to do so) them so they don't feel much -- mostly because they have a tendency to kick our heads off if they do. But it is a balancing act, since anesthesia isn't always the safest thing, and so we use a lot of local blocks. (This time the abscess had to be opened beyond the block, which is why the quote was so funny.)
