Summary: Two strange men make a strange appearance in a strange field in the country. Strangely.

The girl wanders through tall grass, swinging her brother's fire engine among the flowering heads of dandelions and sending fine silver seeds into the air. She's going to be six tomorrow, and she wants a new horse, one that's black and wild because Daffodil is getting too old to carry them very far. She also wants the fire engine, but her brother wouldn't let her play with it, even though it's almost her birthday. He hid it in his most secret place, the one no one knows about at all.

She drives it through the air, skimming the tips of the grasses like clouds. Its red paint shines in the sun. She can always get the things she wants, even when they're hard to find. She's the only one who knows where her brother puts them.

That's why Gamma sent her out here.

The girl squints out over the field, shielding her eyes with the fire engine. The morning started grey, but already the clouds have rolled away over the fields and she can see the shadowy shapes of mountains on the horizon. Gamma said it would be a clear day. She's always right about the weather. Sometimes the girl thinks her grandmother knows everything about everything.

She sits down and thinks hard about the pictures Gamma showed her.

Then she picks a dandelion, one that's tall enough to tickle her nose where she's sitting. She blows the seeds into the sky and wishes for a black horse named Cliff.

The sound is so faint at first, that she thinks it must be her father in the tractor on the other side of the farm, the whisper of blades cutting distant air. But it grows louder, rushing closer like the wind, and drowning the buzz of the insects in the field.

The girl looks up and sees something falling down. It's glowing, like a fire, and it's coming right towards her. The girl thinks of a movie she saw once, and she's a little afraid.

Then a second, darker shape appears in the clear blue sky.

It's moving faster, closing in on the first. The girl stands and backs away, fire truck forgotten in the dirt.

The two shapes meet, and now they're close enough she can see them clearly.

They're people.

The girl watches one catch the other in his arms. The fire dies away, flickering like a birthday candle, and the burning man's head tips back, mouth open in a small 'o'. Together the two men slow until the dark one hovers just above the grass, breathless and clutching the one who fell. They touch down to the earth with a gentle pat. She isn't afraid anymore.

"Ow, shit," the dark man says. He quickly pulls his bare foot off the fire engine. Now she can see that his hair and skin are covered in fine black soot, like her daddy's when he cleans the chimney in their house. What's left of his clothing is torn and singed around the edges. His eyes are wide and white against the dark of his skin.

She looks at the person in his arms.

Though the flames have died during his fall, the girl can feel the heat radiating off his body and it glows like white coals. All his clothes have burned away and he shivers in the summer breeze. He moans softly and curls towards the man holding him, legs dangling limp, the tips of his toes just brushing the tall grass.

The stranger slowly lowers the burning man to the ground. "Pete, hey, Peter, can you hear me?" His voice is as soft as gamma's when she sings to them at night, then he looks up and sees her. "Hey, you!" he shouts. "Come here, can you help me?"

The girl recoils, but she walks towards them anyway.

The burning man, Peter, mumbles again. The girl kneels by his side and brushes the hair from his eyes. He looks nice. His skin is warm, but the white-hot glow is fading. "Nathan?" Peter asks. His eyelashes flutter open for a moment. " 'S done," he says.

"I know."

Nathan turns to the girl, speaking quickly. "My brother, he's-- I need…that is, I don't-- God--" He runs a shaking hand over his face then takes a deep breath and holds it out to her. "I'm Congressman Nathan Petrelli."

The girl smiles. "I'm Jenny," she says and takes his hand. "My Gamma was hoping I'd bring you."
